As vice president and chief executive officer of the University of Virginia Medical Center, Howell oversees the overall operations of the large university-owned teaching hospital.
Before joining the University of Virginia Medical Center in 2002, Howell served for eight years as director and chief executive officer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Howell is a professor of medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and holds academic appointments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health and the colleges of business and pharmacy at the University of Iowa.
