Richard Liekweg

Richard J. Liekweg is the Chief Executive Officer of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center. UCSD Medical Center is the clinical arm of the University of California, San Diego, and part of the University of California system. As the only university-based health care system in the region, UCSD Medical Center provides leadership in patient care, biomedical research, education and community service. UCSD Medical Center includes two hospitals totaling 540 beds and the outpatient medical practices of more than 400 physicians in over 30 specialties.

Prior to joining UCSD Medical Center, Mr. Liekweg spent 16 years with the Duke University Health System. Joining Duke in 1987 as an administrative fellow, he held a variety of administrative positions including Senior Associate Chief Operating Officer for Duke University Hospital. In 1999 he became Chief Operating Officer of Durham Regional Hospital, a 400 bed County Hospital leased by the Duke University Health System. In 2000 he was named Chief Executive Officer of Durham Regional where he led a successful financial and operational turnaround.

Mr. Liekweg is active in local and national healthcare, business and professional organizations. He currently serves as the past-chair, board of directors, Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties; member, board of trustees, California Hospital Association; member, governing board, University HealthSystem Consortium; member, American Heart Association Board of Directors; and member, scientific advisory board, IntelliDOT Corporation. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of Young Presidents Organization, San Diego Chapter.

In 2001, Mr. Liekweg was featured as one of Modern Healthcare’s “Up and Comers” in hospital administration.

Mr. Liekweg received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Michigan School of Business.
