McKernan has been with University Hospital for more than 24 years, serving as executive director of University Physician Associates and then as chief financial officer before becoming chief executive officer.
McKernan also serves as associate vice president of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Clinical Operations.
McKernan is a certified public accountant and president of the Great Southwest Council of the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Rotary Club and serves on several boards related to the health care industry.
