Novation Receives Champions for Change Award

Novation’s Environmental Efforts Lauded for Third Consecutive Year by National Health Care Initiative

IRVING, TX; March 24, 2006 — Novation has been named a 2006 Champion for Change for the third consecutive year, by the national health care initiative, Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E).

“Novation is at the forefront of a fundamental shift in the health care industry toward the proactive improvement of public health,” said Laura Brannen, director of the H2E program. “Novation is driving the sector’s use of healthier and more responsible products and practices. In doing so, they are making it easier than ever for health care facilities to operate in a way that protects the health of patients, workers, communities and our global environment. They are to be commended for their contribution to this visionary work that benefits us all.”

Novation received the award for its leadership in improving the environmental performance of the health care sector by helping hospitals reduce waste, protect the environment, and eliminate mercury.

In 2005, Novation enhanced its contracting process to ensure environmental aspects were included in the bid process through ongoing communications with product managers, members and suppliers. Novation continues to offer education to members and suppliers on alternatives to environmentally hazardous products and materials, and actively pursues the inclusion of safety-related products and programs in its portfolio. The Novation contract catalog is continually monitored and mercury-containing products and devices are removed from the portfolio if alternatives are available.

Novation made big strides in the area of waste reduction by requiring suppliers to respond to bids online through its electronic bid process. Last year, Novation prevented 21,000 reams of paper from entering the waste stream. In addition, Novation continues its corporate recycling program and is working to eliminate the use of foam cups and plates at its facility.

“Novation is honored to receive the award and committed to offering a contract portfolio with safe and effective products and services for VHA and UHC members,” said Maryann Restino, vice president, contract and program services at Novation. “Novation’s contracting process has been enhanced to ensure that Novation awards agreements for products that are safe for patients, health care workers and the environment.”

H2E is a non-profit organization jointly founded by the American Hospital Association, the Environmental Protection Agency, Health Care Without Harm and the American Nurses Association. The organization educates health care professionals about pollution prevention opportunities and provides practical tools and resources to facilitate the industry’s movement toward environmental sustainability.
