Novation Offers Disaster Supply Needs Assessment Tool and Resource Guide

Resource Will Help Hospitals Plan and Prepare for Disasters

IRVING, TX; February 19, 2007 — Novation has released its Disaster Supply Needs Assessment Tool to assist hospitals in their preparation for disasters. The tool allows healthcare facilities to calculate the amount of supplies and pharmaceuticals needed in the event of a disaster.

Having the quantity of products estimated based on usage per patient is a key element when considering a supply list for disaster preparedness. The tool auto calculates supplies needed on hand based on bed count and/or surge capacity to care for patients for one week.

“Supplies are a major concern in health care disaster planning and hospitals need a simple method to calculate their anticipated needs and budget,” said Christine Miller, senior clinical manager at Novation. “The strategy for product planning is to determine an ideal stocking level and increase stock to achieve that level over time, not rapidly stockpiling. The process of slowly raising stock levels allows for proper stock rotation and utilization.”

“The tool works well and it really simplifies our process of determining what we need to have on hand in case of a pandemic,” said Brian Griffith, materials manager at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center.

“Having the estimates of usage per patient is one of the biggest benefits,” stated Jeff Lawton, corporate director of materials management at Eastern Connecticut Health Network. “Considering most of the people putting together the supply lists are non-clinical, the tool makes our job much easier.”

In addition to the assessment tool, Novation has also created a Disaster Preparation Resource Guide, which helps hospitals understand how to treat patients and protect health care workers in the event of a disaster.
